‘Jay-Z Ruined Rap Music’ - Black Lips

May 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Gigwise are reporting a story that The Black Lips feel that Jay-Z has ruined rap. Im sure readers will understand why we are posting this, we obviously dont agree and its not the Jay-Z part that we are worried about. Thats nonsense and everyone knows that, we’re focusing on what was said after that.

The Black Lips are a punk group from Atlanta and this is what lead drummer had to say about Jay-Z.

Joe Bradley said: “I’m a little bias because I love Southern rap and there’s tons of great hip hop out of the north east and I really think they should have stuck to hip hop.”

“They get a little too conscious,” he added. “I like my rap music dumb and simple.”

Lupe’s ‘Dumb It Down’ tracks springs to mind.

The whole point of Hip Hop is be poignant, conscious and expressive. While some of you will think this is nothing, but for us, saying that raps should be dumber and less conscious is saying alot about whats out there right now.

The Black Lips

The Hip Hop Chronicle have reached out to the band for them to clarify their comments and explain what rap music they listen to that fits the ‘dumb and simple’ catergory. This is what they had to say

‘My only comment is that we are all entitled to our own opinions; published or not, does make them any more true than anyone else’s. That’s why they’re not called facts’

You certainly can have your own opinion as to the whole point of hip hop. I’m also sure there are other opinions out there besides yours and this drummer’s. I know a lot of people think the whole point is to get paid. Personally, I like dumb, crazy, twisted stuff. But not just for rap, rock too. I usually can’t stand poignant or conscious rock or rap. It’s boring and defeats the whole purpose of music for me: to have fun! That doesn’t mean I’m ignorant; that’s just how I like my music.
