On Thursday 10th December, LAVA Collective is hosting a leftfield hip hop event at The Gramaphone on

Commercial Street. Headlining the bill is Edan (The Dee*Jay) -This will be his first and only London performance

of 2009. The visionary producer, turntablist and emcee is in town to promote his new record

Echo Party and he is marking the occasion with a 2 hour DJ set.

Joining Edan on this tour is photographer Ricky Powell, who brings his ‘World Famous Slideshow’ to

the UK for the first time. From Run DMC and KRS ONE to Warhol and Basquiat, Powell’s photography

depicts global icons in intimate surroundings. The man they call the ‘’Fourth Beastie Boy’ will take us on

a voyage through his photo archives as he reflects on his experiences, cavorting through the cocainefuelled

hip hop scene of 1980’s New York.

The evening will commence with a screening of the Echo Party video, directed by Tom Fitzgerald. You

can see a clip here: www.jumptheturnstyle.com/?p=5804. Fitzgerald, a film archivist from Los Angeles,

is best known for his work directing videos for Cut Chemist. His trademark style is in evidence here as

he splices footage from diverse sources to create a synchronised and expressive accompaniment to

Edan’s record.

Edan was given access to the Traffic Ent. Group’s vast back catalogue of old school rap, which encompasses

seminal labels like Enjoy, Magic Records, Chocolate Star, and P&P. Echo Party is result of 2

years spent trawling through the original multi-tracks and reworking them in his own inimitable style.

Jehst is stepping up to represent the UK hip hop scene. He will light up the mike with his intelligent lyrics

and intricate flows. Kris Jones (Deep Medi, Soul Jazz) and the LAVA DJs will be on hand to get

the party started.
