Back In The Day: Sad Love Songs

This isnt really a Hip Hop post but this post is dedicated to anyone who has broken up with a loved one.

Real talk, Love can be a hard thing to manage and sometimes you lose yourself. In light of what happened with Chris Brown and Rihanna, it can sometimes be violent.

On the other hand, it can be an easy to manage. Regardless, dont ever forget to show your loved one, how much you care. Shower them with kindness and respect because you never know what’s around the corner. In the famous words of Jay-Z - ’shit was all good just a week ago’.

Yes, the reccession has gripped us all but you can do some inexpensive things.

Dont lash out with profanities either. Try to work it out because the last thing you want to do is regret what you have said.

Communication is key

Our women do go through some mad stuff that sometimes as men, we may not understand. Let’s try our best to!

With today’s selection im going with some recent tracks and some classics.

Ne-Yo - So Sick

Mary J Blige - Be Without You

112 - Its Over Now

Jagged Edge - Walked Outta Heaven

Ginuwine - Differences

KC & Jo Jo - All My Life

Boyz To Men - End Of The Road

Mariah Carey & Boyz To Men - One Sweet Day

Sting - Shape Of My Heart (used as the sample for the Nas track ‘The Message’

Mary J Blige - No More Drama

Toni Braxton - Un-Break My Heart

112 - Sweet Love (Not Really A Sad Love Song But Its Dope Nevertheless)

Im sure there is many more but these are the ones I could think of right now.

I got loads of Valentine-type posts but never got around to it, so you can take this as the post-Valentine’s blog.

Didnt mean to bum you guys out, just thought it was important to pass along the message, whoever you love; tell them before its too late.

Back In The Day: Liverpool FC - Anfield Rap (Video)

Liverpool FC are Britain’s most successful football/soccer club. 18 league titles, 5 European Cups, 7 FA Cups and 3 Uefa Cups.

This particular track ‘Anfield Rap’ was recorded in 1988 and was written by midfielder John Barnes (the first guy you see in the video).

This video had it all, fresh clothes, graffti, rappin, chains.

Back In The Day: Rakim and Eric B

Eric B. was born Eric Barrier in 1965 in Elmhurst, Queens.

Eric B. was a hugely influential DJ and beatmaker whose taste for hard-hitting James Brown samples touched off a stampede through the Godfather of Soul’s back catalog that continues up to the present day.

Rakim was born William Griffin, Jr., in 1968. He came from Long Island. At 16, he converted to Islam and adopted the name Rakim Allah.

Eric B and Rakim

Eric B met Rakim as a mobile DJ for WBLS and they formed a partnership in 1985.

Their first track together was ‘Eric B. Is President with ‘My Melody. This was followed by hits like ‘I Aint No Joke’ and ‘I Know You Got Soul’

In 1987, Paid in Full was released and it became an instant classic. Its considered one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time.

This album was followed in 1988 with ‘Follow The Leader’.

When the group’s contract was up with MCA, there was talk of recording a solo album but unfortunately the partnership broke up.

Legal issues had prevented both artists from starting their solo careers for some time.

Rakim was signed to Universal and in 1997 he released the well-recieved ‘The 18th Letter’ and in 1999 - ‘The Master’

Rakim is considered one of the best to ever do it. Snoop Dogg has openly said he top MC was Rakim. Rakim inspiried artists like Nas. Talib Kweli called him the Godfather of Rap.

Rakim

Make no mistake, Rakim revolutionised emceeing with his poetic flow and elaborate metaphors. Rakim’s rhymes was another instrumental in the track. He is a pioneer, he set another standard in Hip Hop and he is a true microphone fiend.

Back In The Day: Public Enemy

Nowadays in Hip Hop we have the term a ‘conscious rapper or MC’ but over 20 years ago, a group known as Public Enemy revolutionised conscious Hip Hop forever.

Chuck D and Flavor Flav

Consisting of the lead MC, Chuck D, partner Flavor Flav and fabolous production from the legendary Bomb Squad, PE became one of the most definitive groups of all time. It was at Adelphi University in Long Island where Chuck had been DJing and there he met Hank Shocklee and Bill Stephney.

They all had a passion for Hip Hop and politics and they became close friends. Soon Def Jam co-founder and producer Rick Rubin heard a Public Enemy demo tape and signed the group. The rest was history.

Chuck D and Flavor Flav - Legends

For over 20 years, Public Enemy have continued to remain relevant. From their debut release, ‘Yo! Bum Rush The Show’ in 1987, they had cemented their place in music’s Hall of Fame.
