Nowadays in Hip Hop we have the term a ‘conscious rapper or MC’ but over 20 years ago, a group known as Public Enemy revolutionised conscious Hip Hop forever.
Consisting of the lead MC, Chuck D, partner Flavor Flav and fabolous production from the legendary Bomb Squad, PE became one of the most definitive groups of all time. It was at Adelphi University in Long Island where Chuck had been DJing and there he met Hank Shocklee and Bill Stephney.
They all had a passion for Hip Hop and politics and they became close friends. Soon Def Jam co-founder and producer Rick Rubin heard a Public Enemy demo tape and signed the group. The rest was history.
For over 20 years, Public Enemy have continued to remain relevant. From their debut release, ‘Yo! Bum Rush The Show’ in 1987, they had cemented their place in music’s Hall of Fame.
Co-Founder of Public Enemy and Hip Hop Legend Chuck D has announced the launch of a new company who’s goal is to revolutionise the way Hip Hop conducts business across the world.
According to Allhiphop, the new company called ‘The Bring The Noise Eastlink Media, Management, Music Group (BTNEastlink) will offer artists a range of business and digital services.
Under the leadership of Chuck D, lawyer and digital media consultant Dan Lugo and Gary G-Wiz (producer), BTNEastlink will house the Slamjamz Record label and divisons to handle artist management, marketing, consulting, video game scoring among other services.
“Basically, it’s like putting all my diversified people under one roof … A lot of door knocking internationally will take place. Urban has sensibilities that are definitely planetary. But the discussions have to be more intense and more elaborate.”
The Hip Hop legend went on to say that BTNEastlink will offer its clients “what Live Nation has promised Jay-Z, to a much lesser degree,”
The Hip Hop pioneer also hopes to revolutionise the current business model Hip Hop currently works under, something Chuck D and long-time have already done with SlamJamz Records.
“Business could stand, in Hip-Hop, to be a little more organized and less cut-throat … I’ve seen some individual achievements over the years that basically did not look back or did not pave the road for other ways to follow. That doesn’t work worldwide. Domination does not help here. The NBA has 30-some odd teams, and the NFL has 30-some odd teams that all need each other to exist. In Hip-Hop, I’ve often seen that, if this was a Thanksgiving table, everybody got food all over their face, scrambling and running out the back door with the turkey.”
In related news, Public Enemy will be performing in the UK. This Friday sees them perform at the Brixton Academy in London. The last time they performed there, it was a legendary night for Hip Hop. Our UK readers and Public Enemy fans attending the concert can expect another memorable night.
