Tracks Of The Week

Sorry I’m just excited at the prospect of another week of music! Enough about me, the writers at The Hip Hop Chronicle have been hard at work with their picks of the week.

If you are new to this segment, each and every Friday the team pick a selection of tracks that have been released in the past week. They give their honest opinions and insight into why they have chosen a particular song.

Kendrick’s latest release “Compton”, which features Dr. Dre seems to have got the writers attention. As has Adele’s James Bond Theme, “Skyfall”.

Join Natasha, Ritz, Sif Infamous, Eboni, Lewis and Smackie as they take the time out to present you their picks of the week.

Kendrick Lamar ft Dr. Dre – “Compton”

With the release of “good kid m.a.a.d city” arriving fast, K.Dot and the TDE team are really putting in work on the last leg of the promo run. This past week Kendrick has been on late night with Jimmy Fallon, had a interview with the Breakfast Club at Power 1051, winning a BET Hip Hop award for lyricist of the year (EXCLUSIVE!!!) and blessing us with 2 album drops (“art of peer pressure and the above mentioned) to keep the fans fiending for the album. The beat has Just Blaze at his best with Dre and Kendrick both delivering heavy with the verses

Kid Cudi – “King Wizard”

I’ve always been one to say that Cudder makes his best tunes when there is a dark trippy backdrop. Despite the minimalist beat, the rager uses his raps to dance around the beat with ease to give it an undeniable head nodding quality. Afterparty Starter.

Curren$y ft Trademark the Skydiver & Young Roddy – “No Sleep”

With News this week that Spitta’s Jet Life Crew Will be releasing a sequel to Last years'(?) (Can’t keep up with the Jets) “Jet World Order” album will be coming out, i was excited to see what they would come up with. Sonically its a little different to usual Jet Life tunes but definitely still one u can get with the planes with.

Smoke DZA ft Ab-Soul – “Diamond” 2

Contributions from JLR this week!! Out of nowhere Harlem’s Smoke DZA dropped a new free mixtape “K.O.N.Y” which features Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T, Joey Bada$$ and AbdashSoul on this song which takes an unlikely sample to pay homage to strip clubs.

Adele – Skyfall

Adele is back with the official song to the new Bond movie and i have to say this is the best Bond tune since Goldeneye! Adele’s deep voice does wonders for this new Bond track.

Ne-Yo Ft Wiz Khalifa – Don’t Make Em Like You – Ne-Yo is prepping to drop his upcoming album ‘The R.E.D Album’ soon, to hold his fans down he drops this dope track featuring Wiz who can be heard rapping about

‘We be posing for the cameras when they bring us on the carpet/Eating breakfast in the morning while we be reading all the comments.’

R.E.D hits stores on November 6th.

Kendrick Lamar Ft Dr.Dre – Compton – Kendrick is back again dropping some more heat over a Just Blaze beat featuring the Doctor himself. It’s great to see Dre on the track in which K.Dot salutes the city of Compton.
The soulful hook ‘ “COMPTON, COMPTON, AIN’T NO CITY QUITE LIKE MINE!” does wonders for this track in my opinion. This track is going to be a hit around the hip hop world for at least a few months.

“good kid, m.A.A.d city” drops on October 22nd you ready folks?

Wale – The Arrival

So its been a while since Wale’s droped some solo ish, last night Wale dropped his latest track ‘The Arrival’ and I got to say this goes hard. Dope beat with some dope verses.

Kid Cudi – Kid Wizard –

So its always nice to get some new Cudi, if ‘Creepers’ wasn’t enough for Scott’s fans he gives them another dope track. King Wizard has a dope beat through out and a mean hook.

Eboni’s Picks Of The Week – Follow Eboni On @2Emazing

50 Cent Ft Too Short – First Date

50 Cent let us hear the second single off his upcoming album Street Immortal and it…sucks. The chorus is annoyingly pitchy and sounds like a throwaway session that happened because everyone was drunk or high. 50 sounds uncomfortable as he spits his verse, his vocals are just all over the place really. I’m surprised he actually released this as the second single, let alone allowed it to make the cut for the album. As for Too Short he sounds alright but the songs still trash in my opinion.

Miguel – Do You

Miguel released a crazy album, one of my favourites on there is Do You. I love the guitar driven melody and Miguel’s voice just cruising over the beat. It’s one of those songs you could just put on in the background while you do your work it’s super chilled.

Kendrick Lamar Ft Dr Dre – Compton

Kendrick is killin em right now, Compton is a banger and what makes it even better is that it was produced by Just Blaze, so I’m guessing Blaze is off of the video game fix he was doing for a minute. It’s just good to hear the mix between the three. Kendrick does his thing and Dre comes in with a verse (guess who wrote it?). As soon as I heard Compton it went on playlist. Good Kid, m.A.A.D city is probably one of the last highly anticipated albums of the year. I know I’m waiting on it. I’m not sure if I like this track more because Just Blaze produced it or because he produced it for Kendrick Lamar. Either way, it’s a good song.

Lewis’ Picks Of The Week – Follow Him @lew_rid

Adele- Skyfall

Adele‘s James Bond 007 theme ‘Skyfall’ was actually premiered prematurely on radio last night courtesy of RFM radio, France. What you waiting for? ‘Skyfall’ awaits below if you have already heard!

Ne-Yo featuring Wiz Khalifa – Don’t Make ‘Em Like You

It’s about time we had another Ne-Yo hit, and Wiz Khalifa shows up for this catchy tune.

Bruno Mars – Locked Out Of Heaven

Bruno Mars has been topping the charts for the past few years, along with sold out arena tours and winning a host of awards at events such as the BET awards and the Brit award ceremony to name a few. In the process of the Hawaiian pop soul star has been working on his sophomore album “Unorthodox Jukebox”, which is due for release early/mid December. This week we received the first official single from the project. “Locked Out Of Heaven” is the title and I recommend you press play!

Stalley – ‘Loud Motors’

Upon hearing the beat to ‘Loud Motors’ the first word or in my case the words that came to mind were this beat is cleaaaan and that is exactly what resonates when you hear the second instalment in Stalley’s Songs by Me, Stalley series. Produced by Rashad, Stalley spits over the ‘cleaaaan’ beat “Old school paint, new school bass, lift the hoodie up and see the look on they face.” Listening to this track reminds me why I believe Stalley is the most underrated on the MMG roster, yet at the same time confirms why I slyly wish he remains as such and keeps producing quality music, even if it is infrequent.

Ace Hood – ‘I Need Your Love’

Whenever I say I like Ace Hood, at least one of my friends will give me a strong side eye, but I think the dude is cool. Usually more aggressive, I Need Your Love finds Ace displaying a softer side if you want to call it that of how he needs love off some girl he spotted in the mall. Featuring Trey Songz who has put out quite a few tracks this week, this is definitely radio material or the 3.50am track as the club is coming to an end, but in general I can deal with this – I like it.

Big Boi – ‘Mama Told Me’

Set to be the lead single of his forthcoming album Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors this is such an all around feel good funky track that I would challenge anyone to find a reason not to love it. Reminiscent of his former Outkast days, Big Boi and Kelly remind us what their mama’s told ‘em. The radio potential on this is so huge, so expect it to be all over those airwaves soon, if it isn’t already.

Adele – “Skyfall”

Soooo starting off this week is the big bad Bond anthem for the new movie. Adele took that pen and handle this track with the affection and fire of a complete master in the works. Alongside Paul Epworth who also co wrote the theme tune, the lyrics, her epic and angelic voice is not overpowered by the soundtrack. If anything they are in perfect balance and deliver the right amount of chills down the spine throughout the 4 minute track. You know this will at some point get to no:1 right? A thousand wows for this one.

Sterling Simms – “Make You Somebody” Ft Tyga 2 Chainz & Travis Porter

This is a sexy rap song. With some of the hottest rappers spinning on everyone’s radio at the moment, Sterling chose carefully and rightly so as he executed this track right hurr. Travis Porter does what he does alongside Sterling as the hook is too nice. Turn the heat up on the back track with the drums and wala! One hot track at your request. This is definitely one for a late night request for the partner, and once it starts spinning you will wish you heard it sooner.

Miguel – “The Thrill”

I don’t know what this guy is doing but whatever it is he needs to keep doing it! Before the release of his album “Kaleidoscope Dream” the track “Adorn” has been on constant replay on my player. I mean I know we got artists doing it for R’n’B at the moment, but this guy is just not having and it is causing mayhem everywhere in the industry. Then he goes and drops the new video “Do You” with his stunning partner and because we all love that releases he new visual that dropped not to long ago “The Thrill” in abode to her birthday. I mean three presents in one week, my Christmas has started early and if I don’t get much else Miguel will do me just fine.
